Remembering Lisa Hall

Earlier this month we lost a brilliant colleague and wonderful friend in Lisa Hall, a loss that hits especially hard for the Calvert Impact family. Lisa joined Calvert Impact (then Calvert Foundation) in 2005 as Chief Lending Officer before becoming CEO in 2010. She was brilliant, expertly navigating challenging, ever-changing sectors, drawing on her finance, policy and community development background to see every angle of an issue. She was decisive, determined, and unafraid to be bold. So often those traits are associated with hard-charging and uncaring personality types, but Lisa was the exact opposite -- warm, open, welcoming, always expanding the tent.

Her love for her family also defined her; her daughter Leah and husband Randy were her pride and joy. Watching her prioritize her family and while being an ambitious leader set a powerful example for me and all of the staff at Calvert Impact.

Lisa gave me an opportunity to lead that I am especially grateful for. Following Lisa, and Shari Berenbach before her, as I stepped up to the role of CEO at Calvert Impact I truly felt I was standing on the shoulders of giants. Lisa truly was a giant of the field, respected and admired by all, beloved by those lucky enough to get to work with her and inspiring to anyone in her wake.

Her loss is devastating, but her impact was immense. The comments, stories, and tributes that have poured in over the past several days are a testament to her power, her character, and her incredible contributions to the world. May we all be inspired by her example, to live in such a way that our loss is so deeply felt and the world is so obviously a better place for us being in it.
