According to the World Bank, 78% of the world’s poor are rural poor, and many of them are farmers. When investing for social returns, there are few better places to invest than in agriculture. However here at Calvert Foundation we continue to see significant unmet capital needs, with an estimated $13 billion in demand for agricultural smallholder finance. Why is this? What are the risks in agriculture that put investors off? How can we mitigate these? Our Social Impact Research Fellow Euhbin Song asseses why such a large gap exists in agriculture financing and some potential ways to close it in the latest Next Billion post.
